Sunday Morning Bible Classes

Mark’s Gospel: Jesus in Action – Begins January 8 (Parish Center).
Mark is often suggested as a starting place for Bible reading. His account of the gospel (good news) of Jesus focuses on what Jesus did—his actions, rather than his teaching. Led by Pastor Waterstradt, this study will give you a broad understanding of how God came into the world to correct the disaster that happened when our first parents fell into sin.

Most Sunday morning Gospel readings during our church year (November 27, 2011 to Thanksgiving 2012) come from Mark’s Gospel. Our study will not only deepen your understanding of Jesus’ life and work, but it will also help to enhance your worship experience over the next year. This course extends through the spring quarter.

Making Sense out of Sunday – Begins January 8 (Sanctuary).
The worship survey that St. Mark’s members took in September demonstrated many worship-related strengths in our congregation.  One potential area of improvement was helping people understand the “why” behind the “what” in Lutheran worship. Through this six-week study, Pastor Strey will answer a number of questions, such as:
  • What’s the connection between what we believe and what we do in worship?
  • Can we borrow ideas from other Christians for Lutheran worship?
  • What’s the purpose of ceremony and ritual in worship?
  • How can symbolism make sense to me?
  • How do we decide what music is appropriate and inappropriate in worship?
Making Sense out of Lent, will follow, for the remaining six weeks of the winter quarter.

Philippians: Joy amid Suffering – Begins January 8 (Luther Room)
It’s hard to believe that a person could be joyful in prison, but as the apostle Paul wrote the letter to the Philippians behind bars, the Holy Spirit inspired him to write one of the most joy-filled books of the New Testament.  Begin the New Year with encouragement from God’s Word, as David Matthews leads us through this four-chapter New Testament book.

Bible Information Class

Bible Information Class “Grace upon Grace” – Begins January 22 (Luther Room) on Sunday evenings, 6:00-8:00 p.m. with Pastor Strey and running for 20 sessions.

The course is also good for curious observers, lifelong Lutherans, or spiritual people considering a return to church.  If you have questions, Bible Information Class (BIC) will provide answers from God’s Word:
  • How can I get right with God?
  • Creation: fact or fiction?
  • Who is Jesus and why does he matter?
  • What are Baptism and the Lord’s Supper all about?
  • What happens after I die?
Note: Those completing this course will be eligible for Membership at St. Mark’s if desired.
